LAX has 9 security checkpoints with TSA PreCheck lanes and CLEAR biometric lanes. Security is busiest 7–10 AM and 4–8 PM. Use the Leave-By Time calculator to fold the live LAX checkpoint wait, your drive, and gate-walk into one exact departure time.

How many security checkpoints does LAX have?

LAX has 9 security checkpoints across 9 terminals (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, TBIT). TSA PreCheck dedicated lanes are available, giving members a faster, bin-free screening experience. PreCheck is open at the main checkpoints during regular screening hours, though an individual lane can close off-peak. CLEAR biometric kiosks are also deployed at LAX, letting enrolled members skip the ID-verification queue entirely. See CLEAR at LAX for details.

When is LAX security busiest?

LAX security lines are typically longest during 7–10 AM and 4–8 PM. Outside those windows, wait times drop substantially — check the live LAX wait board for the current picture before you head out. General guidance:

  • Domestic flights: arrive at least 2 hours before departure; 2.5 hours during peak periods.
  • International flights: arrive at least 3 hours before departure to cover check-in, security, and any customs pre-clearance.

Not sure when to leave? The Leave-By Time calculator uses the live LAX checkpoint wait, real-time traffic, and your gate-walk distance to give you an exact departure time. Also see how early to arrive at the airport for a full breakdown by flight type.

Which LAX security checkpoint is fastest?

Terminals 6, 7, or 8 checkpoints are typically shorter at peak than Terminals 1–3 and TBIT.

CLEAR is available at LAX and can be stacked with TSA PreCheck for the fastest path through security: CLEAR handles the biometric ID verification, PreCheck handles the bin-free lane. If you frequently travel through LAX during peak windows, combining both programs is the most effective approach. See CLEAR at LAX for kiosk locations and current status.

What are the top LAX airport security tips?

These tips are specific to Los Angeles Int'l (LAX) and verified against current airport configuration:

  • Each of LAX's nine terminals (1–8 plus TBIT) has its own security checkpoint; driving or being dropped at the correct terminal before entering is essential — no airside connector links all terminals.
  • The inter-terminal connector allows airside movement between Terminals 4–8 and TBIT without re-clearing security; use this to reach connected gates after entering at T4.
  • Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) checkpoint handles international departures exclusively — domestic passengers cannot access other terminals through it.
  • Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings are the worst windows; queues at Terminals 1–3 have exceeded 45 minutes during summer peaks even with PreCheck.
  • Rideshare and taxi drop-offs on the upper departures level feed directly to terminal entrances; the lower level is arrivals only — stay upper when departing.

Does LAX have TSA PreCheck?

Yes — LAX has TSA PreCheck lanes at its security checkpoints. PreCheck members keep shoes, belts, light jackets, laptops, and 3-1-1 liquids packed, and pass through a dedicated screening lane. Membership costs $85–$100 for five years and includes a Known Traveler Number (KTN) you add to every booking.

See live PreCheck wait times and current lane status on the LAX TSA PreCheck page. That page also covers which terminals have a PreCheck lane, enrollment locations, and how PreCheck compares to CLEAR and Global Entry at LAX.

Global Entry interviews can be completed at LAX itself — via an on-site enrollment center or Enrollment on Arrival after an international flight — and membership includes TSA PreCheck. See Global Entry at LAX for locations and hours.
