VPS has 2 security checkpoints with TSA PreCheck lanes. Security is busiest 6–9 AM and 3–6 PM, with the heaviest waits on weekend mornings during spring/summer beach season (March–August). Use the Leave-By Time calculator to fold the modeled VPS wait forecast, your drive, and gate-walk into one exact departure time.

How many security checkpoints does VPS have?

VPS has 2 security checkpoints across 1 terminal (Main). TSA PreCheck dedicated lanes are available, giving members a faster, bin-free screening experience. PreCheck is open at the main checkpoints during regular screening hours, though an individual lane can close off-peak.

When is VPS security busiest?

VPS security lines are typically longest during 6–9 AM and 3–6 PM, with the heaviest waits on weekend mornings during spring/summer beach season (March–August). Outside those windows, wait times drop substantially — check the VPS wait forecast for the current picture before you head out. General guidance:

  • Domestic flights: arrive at least 2 hours before departure; 2.5 hours during peak periods.
  • International flights: arrive at least 3 hours before departure to cover check-in, security, and any customs pre-clearance.

Not sure when to leave? The Leave-By Time calculator uses the modeled VPS wait forecast, real-time traffic, and your gate-walk distance to give you an exact departure time. Also see how early to arrive at the airport for a full breakdown by flight type.

Which VPS security checkpoint is fastest?

The Concourse C checkpoint (3 lanes, Allegiant Air only) tends to move fastest outside of Allegiant's own departure bank; the Main Terminal checkpoint serving Concourse A/B gates gets busiest right before the morning wave of Delta, American, and Southwest departures..

CLEAR is not currently available at VPS. TSA PreCheck at VPS remains the best single upgrade for reducing your security wait.

What are the top VPS airport security tips?

These tips are specific to Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS) and verified against current airport configuration:

  • VPS has two separate checkpoints — the Main Terminal checkpoint (serving Concourse A/B) and the Concourse C checkpoint (serving Allegiant Air only, added in the 2022 expansion) — so head to the correct one for your airline before joining a line.
  • TSA PreCheck lanes are open at the Main Terminal checkpoint; VPS does not have CLEAR, so PreCheck or arriving early are your only ways to skip the standard line.
  • This is a leisure-beach airport: Saturday changeover days and spring break/summer weekday mornings see the longest queues relative to VPS's small size — arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight during peak season.
  • The terminal is compact, so even a "long" line rarely means a long walk — but budget extra time anyway, since VPS has far fewer screening lanes than a major hub if a bank of flights departs at once.
  • Connecting between Concourse C and the Main Terminal/Concourse A-B requires exiting through a checkpoint and re-screening — build in walking/shuttle time between the two.

Does VPS have TSA PreCheck?

Yes — VPS has TSA PreCheck lanes at its security checkpoints. PreCheck members keep shoes, belts, light jackets, laptops, and 3-1-1 liquids packed, and pass through a dedicated screening lane. Membership costs $85–$100 for five years and includes a Known Traveler Number (KTN) you add to every booking.

See live PreCheck wait times and current lane status on the VPS TSA PreCheck page. That page also covers which terminals have a PreCheck lane, enrollment locations, and how PreCheck compares to CLEAR and Global Entry at VPS.

VPS does not host a Global Entry enrollment center or Enrollment on Arrival, so the interview has to be completed at another location — but membership still pays off here, since Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck for the VPS PreCheck lanes. Details on Global Entry at VPS.
