IAD has 3 security checkpoints with TSA PreCheck lanes and CLEAR biometric lanes. Security is busiest 5–9 AM and 3–7 PM. Use the Leave-By Time calculator to fold the live IAD checkpoint wait, your drive, and gate-walk into one exact departure time.

How many security checkpoints does IAD have?

IAD has 3 security checkpoints across 4 terminals (A, B, C, D). TSA PreCheck dedicated lanes are available, giving members a faster, bin-free screening experience. PreCheck is open at the main checkpoints during regular screening hours, though an individual lane can close off-peak. CLEAR biometric kiosks are also deployed at IAD, letting enrolled members skip the ID-verification queue entirely. See CLEAR at IAD for details.

When is IAD security busiest?

IAD security lines are typically longest during 5–9 AM and 3–7 PM. Outside those windows, wait times drop substantially — check the live IAD wait board for the current picture before you head out. General guidance:

  • Domestic flights: arrive at least 2 hours before departure; 2.5 hours during peak periods.
  • International flights: arrive at least 3 hours before departure to cover check-in, security, and any customs pre-clearance.

Not sure when to leave? The Leave-By Time calculator uses the live IAD checkpoint wait, real-time traffic, and your gate-walk distance to give you an exact departure time. Also see how early to arrive at the airport for a full breakdown by flight type.

Which IAD security checkpoint is fastest?

West Security Checkpoint (4:45 a.m.–9 p.m.) tends to be less congested than East, which handles the airport's highest passenger volume; travelers enrolled in TSA Pre✓™ should use the dedicated Pre✓™ checkpoint located between East and West rather than waiting in a standard lane..

CLEAR is available at IAD and can be stacked with TSA PreCheck for the fastest path through security: CLEAR handles the biometric ID verification, PreCheck handles the bin-free lane. If you frequently travel through IAD during peak windows, combining both programs is the most effective approach. See CLEAR at IAD for kiosk locations and current status.

What are the top IAD airport security tips?

These tips are specific to Washington (IAD) and verified against current airport configuration:

  • Dulles funnels every passenger through the Main Terminal's Ticketing/Check-In level before security — there's no per-concourse checkpoint like some hub airports, so pick whichever of the East, West, or TSA Pre✓™ checkpoints has the shortest line rather than the one 'closest' to your gate.
  • The East Security Checkpoint handles the greatest passenger volume and is the only one that runs 24 hours a day; after West (4:45 a.m.–9 p.m.) and TSA Pre✓™ (about 4 a.m.–9 p.m.) close for the night, all screening — including after-hours flights — routes through East.
  • TSA Pre✓™ has its own dedicated checkpoint positioned between East and West; the West checkpoint also runs limited TSA Pre✓™ lanes daily from about 6:30–8:00 a.m. and 3:30–5:00 p.m.
  • After clearing security, budget extra time if your gate is on Concourse D: it has no direct AeroTrain stop, so you'll transfer on foot through Concourse C or ride a mobile lounge, versus the roughly 2-minute AeroTrain ride straight to Concourses A, B, or C.
  • CLEAR biometric kiosks are on the Ticketing/Check-In level — one near the TSA Pre✓™/West checkpoint entrance and one outside the East checkpoint — so members can skip the ID-check line before joining a Pre✓™ or standard screening lane.

Does IAD have TSA PreCheck?

Yes — IAD has TSA PreCheck lanes at its security checkpoints. PreCheck members keep shoes, belts, light jackets, laptops, and 3-1-1 liquids packed, and pass through a dedicated screening lane. Membership costs $85–$100 for five years and includes a Known Traveler Number (KTN) you add to every booking.

See live PreCheck wait times and current lane status on the IAD TSA PreCheck page. That page also covers which terminals have a PreCheck lane, enrollment locations, and how PreCheck compares to CLEAR and Global Entry at IAD.

Global Entry interviews can be completed at IAD itself — via an on-site enrollment center or Enrollment on Arrival after an international flight — and membership includes TSA PreCheck. See Global Entry at IAD for locations and hours.
