Where is security in each terminal at BWI?

Each BWI terminal has its own TSA checkpoint, and the line can be short in one terminal and long in the next. Before you pick when to leave, check wait times by terminal and head to the fastest open lane. Not sure how long to budget? How long does airport security really take breaks it down by the hour.

How do you get between terminals at BWI?

No automated people mover or tram. BWI is a single Main Terminal split into five concourses (A-E). Airside, the concourses form TWO separate secure zones: A/B/C (via the A/B/C checkpoint; a new A/B Connector opened January 2026) and D/E (via the D/E checkpoint; a D/E Connector with an 8-lane checkpoint links Concourse D to the international Concourse E). the A/B/C side and the D/E side are NOT connected airside — transferring between them requires exiting security and re-screening.

What is the minimum connection time at BWI?

Give yourself a real cushion to connect at BWI: about 45–60 minutes for a domestic-to-domestic connection, and 90 minutes or more when international travel or a terminal change is involved. See our full guide to minimum connection time.

Arrivals, departures, and getting around BWI

  • Departures are usually upstairs. Most BWI terminals put ticketing, bag drop, and security on the upper (departures) level, with baggage claim and pickup below.
  • Follow your gate, not just your terminal. Inside security, signs point you to gate numbers and concourses — your boarding pass lists both.
  • Accessibility. Elevators, accessible restrooms, and wheelchair assistance are available throughout; ask your airline ahead of time, or look for TSA Cares if you need extra help at screening.
  • Picking someone up? Head to baggage claim on the arrivals level — but to catch a flight, everything you need is on the departures side above.
Cheap BWI parking — comparedFind the lot closest to your terminal and fold the shuttle into your Leave-By Time.

Lounges, dining, and shops live inside each terminal past security — handy once you're through, but they shouldn't change when you leave home. Browsing other airports? TSA wait times by airport lists them all.
