San Antonio (SAT) Airport Accessibility & Wheelchair Services

Wheelchair assistance at San Antonio International Airport is provided free by your airline — request it at booking for best results. For security screening help, call TSA Cares at 1-855-787-2227 at least 72 hours before travel to have a Passenger Support Specialist waiting at the checkpoint. Family lanes, service animal relief areas, and sensory rooms are covered below.

Step-by-step path for requesting and receiving wheelchair assistance through an airport.
The wheelchair-assistance path: request at booking, meet your attendant at check-in, then escort through security to the gate.

Airline-provided service

Wheelchair assistance

Contact your airline at booking or check-in to schedule wheelchair assistance at no charge. For after-hours or immediate/urgent needs, call the airport's wheelchair assistance line at 210-207-3433; courtesy phones are located throughout both terminals.

Tip: request at booking rather than at the airport — airline wheelchair assistants are in higher demand at peak times and early requests are filled first.

TSA Cares

Free security screening assistance

TSA Cares is a free helpline and on-site assistance program for travelers with disabilities, medical conditions, or other circumstances that may affect the security screening process.

How to use: Call 1-855-787-2227 at least 72 hours before travel. A Passenger Support Specialist will meet you at the SAT security checkpoint and guide you through screening at no charge.

A Passenger Support Specialist can meet travelers with disabilities or medical conditions at the checkpoint. Request at least 72 hours before travel by calling TSA Cares at 1-855-787-2227 or submitting the online form at tsa.gov/contact-center/form/cares. SAT's own accessibility page does not list a SAT-specific TSA Cares contact, so use the national TSA Cares line.

Security lanes

SAT does not have a permanently signed dedicated family lane at all checkpoints. Ask any TSA agent at the checkpoint for assistance — agents are trained to help travelers with special needs and can route you around standard queue lines.

Service animal relief areas

Terminal B: adjacent to the west exit at the Baggage Claim level, near the Ground Transportation Center. Post-security relief areas are also available in both Terminal A and Terminal B — ask any airport employee for the nearest one (Terminal A's exact pre-security relief-area location is not published on the airport site).

Note: service animals are permitted throughout all airport areas without restriction. Emotional support animals follow individual airline policies — check with your carrier before travel.

Quiet and sensory room

SAT does not currently have a confirmed public sensory room. SAT does not have a dedicated sensory/quiet room. Travelers with sensory sensitivities should request a free Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard (no documentation required — pick up at the Terminal A Information Booth, email aviterminalmanagement@sanantonio.gov, or call 210-207-3812) to signal airport and TSA staff for extra support, and can ask airline gate staff for pre-boarding or to wait in a quieter area near the gate.

Wheelchair and mobility device rentals

No on-airport wheelchair/scooter rental counter is advertised by SAT; wheelchairs for use inside the terminal are provided free through your airline. For rentals beyond the airport (hotels, attractions), third-party services such as Scootaround (1-888-441-7575) and local San Antonio companies (River City Wheels, Cloud of Goods) deliver mobility scooters and wheelchairs citywide.

Motorized scooters and power wheelchairs are generally available from airlines for gate-to-gate use; contact your carrier directly if you need a motorized device beyond a standard transport chair.

Pro Tip

Request wheelchair service from your airline at booking, not on arrival — SAT's after-hours line (210-207-3433) is meant for emergencies, not standard scheduling. If you or a travel companion has a non-visible disability, pick up a free Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard at the Terminal A Information Booth; it flags staff to offer extra time or assistance without needing to explain anything at the checkpoint or gate.

Frequently asked questions

Is wheelchair assistance free at SAT airport?

Yes — wheelchair assistance at SAT is provided free of charge by your airline or their contracted ground handler. Request it at booking or check-in. The airline arranges and covers the cost; no tipping is required, though it is appreciated.

How do I contact TSA Cares before my flight from SAT?

Call TSA Cares at 1-855-787-2227 at least 72 hours before your flight. The helpline is open weekdays 8 a.m.–11 p.m. ET and weekends/holidays 9 a.m.–8 p.m. ET. You can also submit a request online at tsa.gov/contact-center/form/cares. A Passenger Support Specialist will meet you at the SAT security checkpoint at no cost.

Does SAT airport have a family security lane?

San Antonio International Airport does not have a permanently signed dedicated family lane at all checkpoints, but TSA officers are trained to accommodate travelers who need extra time. SAT does not advertise a dedicated family/special-assistance security lane on its official checkpoint page. TSA Cares passengers are instead met and escorted through the standard Terminal A or Terminal B checkpoint by a Passenger Support Specialist arranged in advance; travelers can also ask any TSA officer at the checkpoint about expedited or side-by-side screening for a family group.

Where is the service animal relief area at SAT airport?

Terminal B: adjacent to the west exit at the Baggage Claim level, near the Ground Transportation Center. Post-security relief areas are also available in both Terminal A and Terminal B — ask any airport employee for the nearest one (Terminal A's exact pre-security relief-area location is not published on the airport site). Service animals are permitted throughout all airport areas without restriction. Emotional support animals follow your individual airline's policies.
