Accessibility
Wheelchair assistance at Pittsburgh International Airport is provided free by your airline — request it at booking for best results. For security screening help, call TSA Cares at 1-855-787-2227 at least 72 hours before travel to have a Passenger Support Specialist waiting at the checkpoint. Family lanes, service animal relief areas, and sensory rooms are covered below.

Airline-provided service
Wheelchair assistance
Request wheelchair assistance through your airline at booking or at the ticket counter on the Departures Level of the new terminal; wheelchair assistants are staged at dedicated service points on that level, and a dedicated 'Assisted' lane at the main security checkpoint serves wheelchair users and anyone needing extra help.
Tip: request at booking rather than at the airport — airline wheelchair assistants are in higher demand at peak times and early requests are filled first.
TSA Cares
Free security screening assistance
TSA Cares is a free helpline and on-site assistance program for travelers with disabilities, medical conditions, or other circumstances that may affect the security screening process.
How to use: Call 1-855-787-2227 at least 72 hours before travel. A Passenger Support Specialist will meet you at the PIT security checkpoint and guide you through screening at no charge.
TSA Cares provides additional assistance to travelers with disabilities or special circumstances during security screening. Call 1-855-787-2227 at least 72 hours before your flight with questions about screening policies, procedures, or what to expect.
PIT's new 12-lane checkpoint (opened with the terminal in November 2025) includes a dedicated 'Assisted' lane for wheelchair users, families traveling with small children, and anyone needing extra time — it isn't separately branded 'family lane,' but functions as one. Ask any TSA officer for the Assisted lane if signage isn't obvious.
Pre-security: outside the terminal near the rental car building entrance. Post-security: on Concourse D, across from Gate D1.
Note: service animals are permitted throughout all airport areas without restriction. Emotional support animals follow individual airline policies — check with your carrier before travel.
Quiet/sensory room available — Presley's Place, a roughly 1,500-sq-ft sensory suite with a family room, three individual rooms, a quiet room, and an airplane-mockup room (real airline seats, overhead bins, and cabin lighting donated by American Airlines), is located past Gate A-7 in the post-security terminal. Ask at either information desk (412-472-3525) for access; free sensory bags are also available at both information desks.
PIT does not rent wheelchairs or scooters directly to the public. Wheelchair assistance through the terminal is provided free by your airline (request at booking or at the ticket counter). If you want your own mobility scooter or wheelchair for the trip, third-party services such as Cloud of Goods or MobilityWorks deliver rentals to the airport or your hotel.
Motorized scooters and power wheelchairs are generally available from airlines for gate-to-gate use; contact your carrier directly if you need a motorized device beyond a standard transport chair.
Pro Tip
Pick up a free Sunflower lanyard, bracelet, or pin at either information desk (pre-security landside or post-security terminal) if you have a non-visible disability — it discreetly signals staff you may need patience or extra help. Airport Ambassadors in purple vests can also walk you to your gate; find them anywhere in the terminal or call 412-472-3525.
Is wheelchair assistance free at PIT airport?
Yes — wheelchair assistance at PIT is provided free of charge by your airline or their contracted ground handler. Request it at booking or check-in. The airline arranges and covers the cost; no tipping is required, though it is appreciated.
