Maps are updated when terminals are renovated or new concourses open. Terminal 5 at LAX, for example, has been closed since October 2025 for reconstruction — always confirm your terminal from your boarding pass rather than relying on a saved map.
Here is what each terminal or concourse at IAD handles — which airlines fly from it, the gate range, and key amenities to know before you go.
The iconic Eero Saarinen-designed building with a sweeping curved roof. Upper level handles ticketing, check-in, and security (East and West checkpoints). Lower level handles arrivals, baggage claim, and ground transportation including the Silver Line Metro station. All five concourses are accessed from here via AeroTrain, pedestrian walkway, or mobile lounge.
Primary international concourse. Gates A1-A32 (plus lower-level regional gates A1A-A6A for smaller aircraft). Airlines include Air France-KLM, Etihad Airways, Virgin Atlantic, TAP Air Portugal, EgyptAir, and Volaris. Amenities include a chapel near A32, Sleepbox nap pods (A6-A14), and a pet relief area. Reachable by AeroTrain or mobile lounge from Main Terminal, and also via pedestrian walkway through Concourse B.
28 gates (B38-B81). Home to American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, Turkish Airlines, and other carriers. The largest retail footprint in the airport (~13,000 sq ft) plus the FunWay children's play area near B70. Connected to the Main Terminal by the 1,000-foot underground pedestrian walkway with moving sidewalks — no train or lounge required. Also connected directly to Concourse A airside.
24 gates (C1-C28). United Airlines exclusive. Connected to the Main Terminal by AeroTrain. Features Chef's Table by Wolfgang Puck and a nursing room at C11. Concourse C also provides access to Concourse D via an internal shuttle bus or people mover for United connecting passengers.
27 gates (D1-D32). Operated exclusively by United Airlines for overflow domestic and some international flights. Only accessible from the Main Terminal by mobile lounge; transfers can take up to 15 minutes. Also reachable airside from Concourse C via an internal shuttle. Pet relief area and nursing room are both at D1.
Small satellite concourse with just 4 gates (Z6-Z10), located closest to the Main Terminal. Used for overflow or charter operations. Minimal dining and retail options. Accessed by mobile lounge.
Three systems run in parallel: (1) AeroTrain — automated underground rail connecting Main Terminal to Concourses A, B, and C; trains run continuously with ~2-minute travel times, operating 24 hours. (2) Pedestrian walkway — 1,000-foot underground tunnel with moving sidewalks linking Main Terminal directly to Concourse B (and onward airside to Concourse A); no wait, fastest option for B and A. (3) Mobile lounges — 19 vintage elevated bus vehicles dating to the 1960s; serve Concourse A (alternate to AeroTrain), Concourse D (only option from the terminal side), and Concourse Z; depart every ~5 minutes but the ride can take up to 15 minutes. Concourse D is also reachable airside from Concourse C via an internal shuttle bus for connecting United passengers.
Timing tip
Always allow 15–30 minutes for any inter-terminal transfer at IAD — wait times for people-movers, buses, or security re-screening add up faster than the physical distance suggests. Build the buffer into your Leave-By time, not your gate arrival time.
If your gate is in Concourse D, budget an extra 20-25 minutes — mobile lounges are the only way to reach it from the Main Terminal, and with boarding, travel, and deplaning the lounge, the transfer routinely takes 15+ minutes; missing a Concourse D departure is one of the most common connection failures at IAD.
A few habits that prevent last-minute sprints:

Your boarding pass shows the exact gate. Open your airline app about two hours before departure — gate assignments sometimes change after check-in closes. Look for departure boards throughout the terminal for real-time gate information.
