Flight cancelled: what to do in the next 60 minutes

Act immediately. The fastest route to a new seat is the airline app — not the gate agent line, which is usually 30–60 minutes long during a mass cancellation. Here is what to do in order.

Do this NOW (in this order)

  1. Open the airline app first — do not join the gate line yet.

    Most airlines push a rebook option directly in the app when they cancel your flight. Delta, United, and American all send a push notification — tap it, select from the presented options, and confirm. This is almost always faster than waiting at the gate or calling.

  2. Call the elite or credit card line simultaneously — or if the app fails.

    If you have elite status: call the elite line — hold times are far shorter than general customer service. If you carry an airline credit card: that card's travel concierge often connects you to a dedicated agent. General lines can hit 1–3 hour holds during mass cancellations.

  3. Get in line at the gate or ticket counter as a backup.

    Gate agents can do things the app cannot — confirm you on a partner airline or waitlist you for a sold-out flight. Start walking there while you are on hold so you are in position if the call drops.

  4. Check competing airlines within the first 30 minutes.

    If your airline cannot get you there same-day or tomorrow: check Delta, United, American, and Southwest directly. Ask the gate agent to book you on a competing airline — airlines sometimes accommodate this for significant disruptions, especially on the last flights of the day.

Your rights when a flight is cancelled

DOT cash refund rule (in effect 2026): If the airline cancels your flight — regardless of the reason — you are entitled to a full cash refundof your ticket, not a voucher. The airline will often offer a travel credit first. You can decline and request cash. That is your right under the DOT's Automatic Refund Rule, finalized October 2024 and fully in force through 2026.

Meals and hotels:

  • DOT does not require airlines to provide meals or hotels for weather cancellations.
  • For airline-caused cancellations: most major carriers (Delta, United, American) voluntarily provide meal vouchers ($12–15) and hotel accommodation if you are stranded overnight.
  • You must ask — airlines do not always proactively offer this at the gate.
  • Keep all receipts if you book your own hotel. Some airlines will reimburse reasonable expenses for significant airline-caused cancellations.

Rebooking strategies

Get on every flight to your destination city:

When rebooking, ask to be added to the standby list for every earlier flight to your destination — even if the flight shows sold out. No-shows frequently open seats close to departure. Delta, United, and American all have same-day standby — ask specifically for "standby", not just "waitlist", to make sure you get on the right list.

Nearby airports:

If your destination has a close alternate, ask to be rebooked there. Stuck at SFO — ask about OAK or SJC. Stuck at JFK — ask about LGA or EWR. You will likely need to arrange your own ground transport, so weigh whether the time saving justifies it.

Ask for a same-day confirmed change, not just standby:

If you can reach your destination same-day via a different routing, ask to be confirmed on it rather than placed on standby. Airlines are often more willing to confirm you on an alternate routing following a cancellation than during a routine delay.

If you are stranded overnight

  1. Document your cancellation: photograph the departure board showing the cancellation and the reason. You will need this for travel insurance and credit card delay claims.
  2. Ask for a hotel voucher at the customer service desk, not the gate. Be polite but firm: "I understand it may be weather, but can you help with accommodation options?"
  3. Book your own hotel if needed: keep the receipt. Many hotels near airports have last-minute rates. Some airlines maintain a hotel desk with negotiated properties — ask before you start searching.
  4. File a credit card travel delay claim: most premium cards (Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum, Capital One Venture X) cover $200–$500 per ticket for hotel, meals, and transport expenses when you are stuck 6 or more hours. You must have paid for the ticket at least partially with that card.

Weather vs. airline-caused — does the reason matter?

  • For your cash refund: no — you get it either way if the airline cancels your flight.
  • For additional compensation (hotel, meals): yes — airlines are not legally required to provide these for weather cancellations, though many do as a courtesy.
  • For EU EC-261 cash compensation: yes — weather is an "extraordinary circumstance" that exempts airlines from the €250–€600 cash payment. Mechanical issues and crew problems are typically airline-caused and do qualify.

Bottom line

Always request a cash refund. Do not accept a voucher as your only option — DOT requires airlines to provide cash regardless of why they cancelled your flight.

After you get home

  • Request a cash refund retroactively — if you accepted a voucher under pressure, you can still ask for cash. Airlines must provide it under DOT rules. Contact the airline by phone or in writing and reference the Automatic Refund Rule.
  • File a travel insurance or credit card delay claim if you incurred hotel or meal expenses. Attach all receipts and your cancellation documentation — claims without receipts are routinely denied.
  • If the flight was EU EC-261 eligible: file with the airline directly using their online claims form. Deadlines vary by country — UK 6 years, France 5 years, Germany 3 years. File early to avoid documentation gaps.
  • File a DOT complaint if an airline refuses a valid cash refund at transportation.gov. DOT complaints are tracked publicly and carry meaningful pressure on airlines.
