How to access airport lounges without a membership

By the TSA Wait Times team · Updated July 2026 · Published June 2026

You do not need to pay $650/year for a lounge membership to get in. Credit cards with Priority Pass, day passes, and business class tickets all get you access. Here are six ways, ranked by cost.

Ways to get into an airport lounge without membership
Day pass, credit card, or membership — the routes into a lounge, compared.

Method 1: Credit cards with Priority Pass (free after card fee)

Priority Pass is a network of 1,300+ lounges worldwide. Several premium travel cards bundle it automatically — you pay the annual card fee and Priority Pass is included at no extra charge.

Cards with unlimited Priority Pass access

CardAnnual feeWhat you get
Amex Platinum$695Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass 1,300+ lounges, Delta SkyClub when flying Delta. Guest fee at Centurion: $50 per guest (changed 2024).
Chase Sapphire Reserve$550Priority Pass Select — 1,300+ lounges, 2 free guests per visit
Capital One Venture X$395Capital One Lounges (DFW, DEN, IAD, more opening), Priority Pass — unlimited guests
Citi Prestige$495Priority Pass with up to 4 free guests per visit

Cards with limited Priority Pass

  • Amex Business Platinum: Priority Pass + Centurion Lounge access
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: Priority Pass included but limited lounge types — guest fees vary and some partner lounges are excluded

Practical note: Priority Pass lounges are not all created equal. Some are excellent — Plaza Premium and select Aspire Lounges are consistently strong. Others amount to a room with vending machines and a bar. Research the specific lounge at your airport before counting on it for a full meal.

Method 2: Airline co-branded credit cards with lounge access

If you fly one airline heavily, its co-branded card can give you full membership to that carrier's own lounge network.

CardAnnual feeLounge access
Amex Delta Reserve$650Delta SkyClub full access. Note: Sapphire Reserve holders now pay $50/visit at SkyClub (from 2025).
Chase United Club Infinite$525Full United Club access + 2 guests
Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite$595Admirals Club full access + immediate family
Alaska Airlines Visa Signature—Lounge access removed in 2024 — no longer included

Method 3: Day passes (no card required)

Many lounges sell single-visit passes at the door or through their app. No membership needed — you just pay and walk in.

LoungeDay pass priceNotes
Priority Pass (no card)$32–$50Buy via the Priority Pass app without a card membership
United Club$59Available at the door or through the United app
American Admirals Club$79Only available when flying American that day
Delta SkyClubNot availableDay passes removed in 2023 — card or elite status required
Plaza Premium~$40–$60Available online or via app at many international airports

When a day pass is worth it: a long layover of 3 or more hours, a delay, or when you need reliable Wi-Fi and a quiet place to work. At $32 to $60 it is roughly comparable to a meal and a drink at the terminal — but you get more food, charging, and calm included. For a one-hour connection it is almost never worth it.

Method 4: Fly business class or first class

A premium cabin ticket on most major carriers includes the airline's lounge before departure — and partner lounges on connections.

  • Delta Polaris/First: Delta SkyClub access on day of travel
  • United Polaris: United Polaris Lounge access (Newark, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco)
  • American Business: Admirals Club access when flying on a business or Flagship Business fare
  • JetBlue Mint: Mint Studio lounge access at JFK only
  • International carriers (Lufthansa, British Airways, Singapore Airlines): full premium lounge access included on business and first class tickets

Method 5: Elite status on the airline

High-tier frequent-flyer status includes lounge access with most major US carriers. Lower tiers (Silver/Gold) generally do not.

  • Delta Platinum and Diamond Medallion: SkyClub access when flying Delta metal
  • United Platinum 1K: United Club access
  • American Executive Platinum: Admirals Club access on eligible itineraries
  • Alaska MVP Gold 75K: Alaska Lounge access where available

Earning elite status is effectively free — it comes from flying — but it requires consistent loyalty to one carrier over a full calendar year.

Method 6: Alliance elite status lounge reciprocity

If you hold high-tier status with any airline in a global alliance, partner airlines honor it in their lounges — even if you're not flying the carrier where you earned your status.

  • Star Alliance Gold (earned through United, Lufthansa, Air Canada, and others) → access to all 1,000+ Star Alliance Gold lounges worldwide
  • oneworld Sapphire/Emerald (earned through American, British Airways, Japan Airlines, others) → access to oneworld partner lounges globally
  • SkyTeam Elite Plus (earned through Delta, Air France, Korean Air, others) → all SkyTeam member lounges

Practical example: a United Platinum member (Star Alliance Gold) gets lounge access in Lufthansa Business Lounges at Frankfurt when connecting on Lufthansa — no Lufthansa status needed.

What lounges actually offer

Most lounges include comfortable seating, free food (light snacks to a full buffet), an open bar, fast Wi-Fi, quiet space, and charging stations. Showers show up at premium and international lounges.

Flagship lounges — Centurion, United Polaris, and Qantas First — offer restaurant-quality food, spirits, and showers. Standard Priority Pass lounges vary widely: research your specific airport's option before counting on a full meal.

Which credit card gives the best lounge access?

For pure breadth: the Amex Platinum — it covers Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass, and Delta SkyClub when flying Delta. For value: the Capital One Venture X at $395/year gives you Capital One Lounges, Priority Pass, and unlimited guests.

Can I bring guests to airport lounges?

It depends on the card. Chase Sapphire Reserve Priority Pass allows 2 free guests per visit. Amex Platinum Centurion Lounges now charge $50 per guest. United Club Infinite includes 2 guests. Always check your card's current benefit terms — guest rules have tightened significantly since 2023.

Is a day pass to an airport lounge worth it?

Worth it on delays or long layovers of 3 or more hours. At $32 to $60, it is comparable to buying a meal and a drink at the terminal — but you get fast Wi-Fi, a quiet space, and often more included food. Not worth it for a one-hour connection.

What is the best airport lounge for food?

Amex Centurion Lounges consistently rank highest for food quality among US domestic lounges. United Polaris Lounge at Newark is also exceptional. Among international options, Singapore Airlines SilverKris and Qatar Airways Al Mourjan are widely considered among the world's best — but those require business class tickets or top-tier status.
