Airline alliances explained: Star Alliance, oneworld, and SkyTeam

By the TSA Wait Times team · Updated July 2026 · Published June 2026

The three airline alliances let you earn miles on your home airline while flying a partner, and redeem miles for seats on partners. For most domestic travelers, alliances rarely matter. For international and premium travel, they can mean the difference between a great redemption and no availability.

The three alliances at a glance

Each alliance connects a US anchor carrier to a global network of partners for earning, redeeming, and elite recognition.

Star Alliance — the world's largest

Founded in 1997, Star Alliance is the biggest alliance by member count and destinations. Its 26 airlines serve more than 1,150 destinations and operate over 19,000 daily flights. ITA Airways (Italy) joined Star Alliance in April 2026, adding direct coverage of Italian routes. The US anchor is United Airlines, whose MileagePlus program lets you book on Lufthansa, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, Turkish Airlines, Swiss, and Austrian among others.

The standout redemption: United MileagePlus miles can book ANA first class to Tokyo at historically low award rates — long considered one of the best redemptions in the miles community. Aeroplan (Air Canada) and Avianca LifeMiles also earn into Star Alliance flights and sometimes carry lower rates than MileagePlus for specific routes.

oneworld — premium and Pacific-strong

Founded in 1999, oneworld has 15 full members after Hawaiian Airlines joined as the newest member in April 2026, adding Hawaii route coverage. The US anchor is American Airlines, whose AAdvantage program connects to British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Finnair, and Royal Jordanian. Members provide access to nearly 700 lounges and 13,000 daily departures worldwide.

The standout redemption: Alaska Mileage Plan miles can book Cathay Pacific first class at rates well below what most US programs charge — a famous deal in the miles community. Iberia Plus also offers low-rate business class to Europe and Latin America. Alaska is a oneworld partner (affiliated but not a full member), so its Mileage Plan earns and redeems across the oneworld network.

SkyTeam — transatlantic and Korea

Founded in 2000, SkyTeam has 18 member airlines (ITA Airways departed for Star Alliance in April 2026) serving more than 1,000 destinations across 160 countries and 750 lounges worldwide. The US anchor is Delta Air Lines, whose SkyMiles program connects to Air France, KLM, Korean Air, China Southern, Aeromexico, Garuda Indonesia, and Saudia.

The standout redemptions: Delta SkyMiles to Air France or Virgin Atlantic business class on transatlantic routes. Air France Flying Blue also runs monthly promotions that cut business-class award costs by 25–50%, making it one of the most dynamic transfer options in the SkyTeam network.

Carriers outside the alliances

Several major US carriers have no global alliance membership.

  • Southwest, Frontier, Allegiant, Breeze: not alliance members. Their loyalty programs earn only on their own flights and select bilateral partners.
  • Alaska Airlines:a oneworld partner (affiliated but not a full member). Alaska Mileage Plan miles earn and redeem on oneworld airlines like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Japan Airlines — often at better rates than AAdvantage itself.
  • JetBlue: no formal alliance membership. JetBlue partners individually with American and others without global alliance affiliation.

When alliances matter for you

For most domestic flyers, alliance membership is background noise. Here is when it actually moves the needle.

Matters a lot if you…

  • Book international multi-airline itineraries: alliance partners can issue one ticket, combine miles earning across legs, and coordinate checked luggage through to your final destination.
  • Redeem miles for a partner airline flight: using United miles on Lufthansa, or Alaska miles on Cathay Pacific, requires an alliance (or bilateral) relationship between the two airlines.
  • Need lounge access on long-haul connections: alliance elite members are typically honored in partner airline lounges on the same itinerary.
  • Building towards alliance elite status: Star Alliance Gold, oneworld Sapphire, and SkyTeam Elite Plus all provide reciprocal benefits — lounge access, priority boarding, and upgrade priority — across every member airline in the alliance.

Does not matter if you…

  • Fly exclusively domestic US routes on one carrier: alliance membership never comes into play on point-to-point US travel.
  • Use discount carriers for leisure travel: Southwest, Frontier, and Allegiant are outside the alliance system entirely.
  • Hold a general travel card: Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards transfer to multiple airlines across all three alliances, so you are not locked into one before you fly.

Which alliance should you pick?

The right alliance is almost always the one your home airport hub carrier belongs to.

  • United hub (EWR, ORD, IAH, SFO, LAX, DEN): Star Alliance — build MileagePlus and use it on Lufthansa, ANA, and Singapore Airlines.
  • American or Alaska hub (MIA, DFW, JFK, PHL, CLT, SEA, PDX): oneworld — AAdvantage or Alaska Mileage Plan, which unlock British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas.
  • Delta hub (ATL, JFK, MSP, DTW, SLC, LAX): SkyTeam — SkyMiles or Air France Flying Blue for transatlantic and Korean routes.

If you split time across carriers, focus on the alliance that best covers your most common international destinations. Miles experts often maintain one active program per alliance — AAdvantage, MileagePlus, and Flying Blue — to maximize award availability for any route.

Alliance elite status benefits

Each alliance has tiered elite levels recognized at every member airline. Earning status with your home carrier unlocks reciprocal benefits system-wide.

Practical example: a Delta Platinum Medallion member (SkyTeam Elite Plus) gets lounge access and upgrade priority when flying Air France on the same itinerary — not just on Delta metal. Similarly, a United 1K member (Star Alliance Gold) is recognized at Lufthansa and ANA airport counters worldwide.

Know your airline's program before you fly

Alliance knowledge helps you plan the miles game long-term. For your next trip, see how each anchor carrier handles check-in and bags:

  • Delta check-in guide · Delta baggage fees
  • American check-in guide · American baggage fees

Packing an international itinerary? See airline baggage fees compared and oversize and overweight baggage rules before you check in. And if you are not yet enrolled in an expedited security program, pick the right one first: TSA PreCheck vs CLEAR vs Global Entry.

Does Alaska Airlines belong to an alliance?

Alaska is a oneworld partner (affiliated but not a full member). Alaska Mileage Plan miles earn and redeem on oneworld airlines like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Japan Airlines.

Can I use Delta miles on Air France?

Yes — Delta (SkyTeam) and Air France (SkyTeam) are alliance partners. You can book Air France seats using Delta SkyMiles, subject to award availability.

What is the best alliance for flying to Europe?

All three have strong European coverage. Star Alliance via Lufthansa and Swiss is strongest for Germany and Switzerland; oneworld via British Airways is best for the UK; SkyTeam via Air France and KLM is best for France and the Netherlands.

Do alliance benefits apply on budget carriers?

No. Southwest, Frontier, Allegiant, and Breeze are not alliance members and do not honor alliance elite benefits.
