Rideshare & Ground Transport
Rideshare pickup at SAN is not always at the arrivals curb — most airports now route Uber and Lyft to a dedicated lot or garage. Here is exactly where to go, how to get there, and how to keep the fare reasonable.

Terminal 2: Departures Level island, designated TNC zone outside Door 12. Terminal 1 (under reconstruction 2026): follow current temporary TNC signage outside baggage claim.
Same Terminal 2 Departures Level TNC zone as Uber; Terminal 1 temporary zone matches Uber.

In the app
Select 'SAN Terminal 2' or 'SAN Terminal 1' in the app; T2 pickup is at the Departures Level Door 12 island.
Terminal 2: from baggage claim (Arrivals Level) take the elevator or escalator up one level to the Departures Level and walk to the center island outside Door 12; follow 'Rideshare' signs. Terminal 1: follow temporary TNC signage directly outside baggage claim.
Cell Phone Lot
The Cell Phone Lot is near N. Harbor Drive by the rental car area — follow 'Cell Phone Lot' signs from Airport Loop Rd; 3–5 min to Terminal 2. Cell phone lot details →
When surge peaks: Surge spikes Sunday evenings 4–8pm, military leave weekends, and during Comic-Con (July) and San Diego street events; Padres playoff runs also affect downtown traffic and fares.
Wait tip
SAN is compact with a single runway — surges are common on Sunday evenings and military long-weekend returns (Camp Pendleton / Miramar bases nearby); request at the Departures Level, not the Arrivals curb.
Rideshare is usually the fastest door-to-door option, but it is not always the cheapest — especially during surge.
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Rideshare Uber / Lyft | Door-to-door convenience, groups with bags, no cash needed | Surge pricing on busy evenings & events; long walk to pickup lot |
| Taxi Metered cab | Predictable metered fare during surge, no app required | Often more expensive off-peak; cash sometimes required |
| Transit Train / bus | Lowest cost option, immune to surge pricing and traffic | Not available at every airport; less practical with luggage |
