Flight day

A boarding pass has about 15 fields. Most travelers only look at the gate and seat number. Here is what every section means — and the two fields that matter more than the gate.

1. Boarding Time
Not the departure time. This is when your zone is called. Miss boarding = miss the flight. Usually 20–30 minutes before departure.
2. Gate
Can change at any time. Always verify on the airport departure board, not just your pass.
3. Boarding Group / Zone
When you board relative to others. Zone 1 / Group 1 boards first. Later zones mean less overhead bin space.
4. Seat
Row number + letter. A/B/C = window-to-aisle left side; D/E/F = aisle-to-window right side on most narrow-body jets.
PASSENGER NAME
Your legal name as on your government ID. Minor differences (middle name missing) are usually fine. A completely different last name may be flagged at the TSA checkpoint.
CONFIRMATION / PNR
6-character alphanumeric record locator (e.g. ABC123). Used for rebooking, seat changes, and pulling up your reservation at the counter.
FLIGHT NUMBER
Airline code + number (e.g. DL 428 = Delta Flight 428). The number does not indicate distance or direction — it is just a route identifier.
FROM / TO
3-letter IATA airport codes (ATL = Atlanta, LAX = Los Angeles). Domestic flights also show city names alongside the code.
DATE
The flight date — not necessarily today's date if you checked in early and the midnight rollover has passed.
DEPARTURE TIME
When the plane pushes back from the gate. Doors close 10–15 minutes before this time — plan to be seated earlier.
BOARDING TIME
When your zone or group is called. Typically 20–30 minutes before departure. This is your real deadline, not departure time.
GATE
Where to board. Gates change — always verify on the airport departure board before heading to the gate area.
TERMINAL
Which building to be in. Critical at airports with separate terminals that require a shuttle or AirTrain between them — JFK, LAX, and ORD are common examples.
SEAT
Row + letter. On most US narrow-body jets: A=window, B=middle, C=aisle (left side); D=aisle, E=middle, F=window (right side).
CLASS OF SERVICE
F=first class, J=business, W=premium economy, Y/B/M/Q/K/etc.=economy. Different booking class codes within economy reflect fare type but seat in the same cabin.
SEQUENCE NUMBER
Your check-in order. 001 means you checked in first. Does not affect boarding order — that is determined by your group or zone, not sequence.
BOARDING GROUP / ZONE
The order you board. Zone 1 or Group 1 boards before Zone 2 / Group 2. Elite flyers and premium cabins board earliest; later zones mean less overhead bin space.
TSA PRE-CHECK INDICATOR
'TSA PRE', 'TPRE', or a small logo printed on the pass. Use the dedicated PreCheck lane — shoes on, laptop in bag, no body scanner required.
BARCODE / QR CODE
Encodes all boarding data. Scanned at the security checkpoint and again at the gate. Keep it unfolded and your screen at full brightness.
The boarding group or zone on your pass determines when to line up. Earlier groups board faster, experience less aisle congestion, and almost always find overhead bin space above their seat.
| Group | Who boards |
|---|---|
| Group 1 / Zone 1 / Priority | First class, elite status, active military, passengers with disabilities |
| Group 2 | Some co-branded credit card holders (e.g. Delta SkyMiles card), premium economy |
| Groups 3–5 | Regular economy — later zone = later boarding, less overhead bin space |
| Southwest A / B / C | No assigned seats or numbered groups. Check in exactly 24 hours before departure to get an 'A' boarding position and pick any open seat. |
Both scan identically at the security checkpoint and gate scanner. Each format has one thing worth knowing before you reach the door.
Mobile
Screenshot it before boarding — there is often no Wi-Fi signal in the jet bridge. A live pass saved to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet is the most reliable option of all.
Paper
Don't fold over the barcode — a crease across the QR code can prevent it from scanning. Keep it face-up in a pocket or bag sleeve.
If your mobile battery dies at the gate: airline agents can usually pull up your boarding info by name and flight number. Have your confirmation code ready as a backup.
What does 'TSA PRE' on my boarding pass mean?
You've been selected (random or via enrolled KTN) for the PreCheck lane. Use the dedicated lane — shoes stay on, laptop stays in bag, no body scanner.
Can I fly if my name on the boarding pass differs from my ID?
Minor differences (missing middle name, nickname) are fine. A completely different last name may be flagged at the checkpoint.
What if my gate changes after I get my boarding pass?
Always verify at the airport departure boards. Gates change frequently, especially within 30 minutes of boarding.
How early do boarding passes become available?
Most US airlines open check-in 24 hours before departure. You can get your boarding pass then.
