Arrivals pickup guide
Picking someone up at Detroit (DTW)? The Cell Phone Lot (North & South)is the free designated waiting area where drivers park at no charge while their passenger's flight lands and bags are collected. Below you will find exact directions, the time limit and fee rules, how to know when your passenger is ready, and what to do if the lot is full.

The DTW cell phone lot is called the Cell Phone Lot (North & South). DTW has two free cell phone lots, one per terminal. For McNamara Terminal (Delta hub — most flights): take I-94 to exit 194A, merge onto I-275 South, take exit 15 (Eureka Rd), turn left (east), and the South Cell Phone Lot is immediately on your right at 34697 Eureka Rd. For North Terminal (Coleman Young Terminal): take I-94 to exit 198A (Merriman Rd toward Metro Airport), follow signs toward Rental Car Return/Green Lot Parking, stay left onto E Service Dr, and turn left into the North Cell Phone Lot at ~638 E Service Dr.
Open the Cell Phone Lot (North & South) in Google Maps for turn-by-turn navigation to the lot entrance.
2 hours free. There is no charge regardless of how long you stay, but plan your timing so you pull up to arrivals right as your passenger steps outside — circling burns time and fuel, and curbside officers will wave you on if you stop too early.
Capacity: The Cell Phone Lot (North & South) holds north lot: ~36 spaces; South lot: capacity not published by airport. On busy travel days the lot can fill up, so arrive early and have a backup plan.
Ask your passenger to text you once they've landed and are heading to baggage claim, then confirm carousel assignment via the airline's app (Delta Fly, United, etc.) or a flight tracker like FlightAware before pulling to the curb — DTW baggage claim can take 15–25 minutes after touchdown.
As a general rule, ask your passenger to text you only after they have their bags and are physically walking toward the arrivals curb — not when the plane touches down. Checked-bag passengers typically need 15–25 minutes after landing for baggage claim at domestic airports, and 45–60 minutesafter landing at international gates where customs adds extra time. Once you get the “at curb with bags” message, pull out and head straight there — a precise pick-up beats circling every time.
Know your passenger's terminal before leaving home — McNamara Terminal handles Delta and most major domestic/international flights while North Terminal serves other carriers; picking the wrong lot means a 10+ minute re-drive. The South Cell Phone Lot also offers free Level 2 EV charging (ChargePoint) at the southeast corner of the lot.
If the Cell Phone Lot (North & South) is full when you arrive, you have three practical options:

Know exactly when to leave for the airport
The Leave-By Calculator combines the live DTW TSA wait time, your drive with real-time traffic, and your boarding window into one exact time to walk out the door — no more guessing or adding “just in case” buffers by hand.

If the Cell Phone Lot (North & South) is full, your best options are to do a slow loop of the airport access road and try again, pull into a short-term or daily parking garage (free for the first 15–30 minutes at many airports), or wait in an adjacent surface lot if one is available. Avoid stopping on the terminal curbside — officers will wave you on immediately.
Most cell phone lots, including the Cell Phone Lot (North & South), require drivers to remain with their vehicles at all times. Unattended vehicles are typically towed at the owner's expense. If you need to use a restroom or grab a snack, look for amenities inside or adjacent to the lot before committing to a long wait.
